Parts of Speech - Definition & TypesParts of Speech: The classification of words categorized by their roles and functions within the structure of the language is called parts of speech. There are eight parts of speech and they are as follows.

  1. Noun
  2. Pronoun
  3. Verb
  4. Adjective
  5. Adverb
  6. Preposition
  7. Conjunction
  8. Interjection

Noun: Noun refers to the place, person, things, ideas, concepts, etc.
Example: 

    • John is a good boy.
    • Bengaluru is a good city.

Pronoun: pronoun refers to a noun or phrases; instead of the repeated use of the same noun(s)/noun phrase(s).
Example: 

    • John is a good boy. He gets up early in the morning.
    • Mary is a foodie. She likes nonveg.

Verb: verb shows action or an ongoing condition. It is considered as the heart of a sentence.
Example: John is playing. He loves cricket.

Adjective: Adjective modifies or describes noun in a sentence.
Example: John likes Beautiful colours. Mary also loves his wonderful paintings.

Adverb: modify or describe adjectives, verbs, or other adverbs. It answers the questions When? Where? How? or How much?
Example: John runs very fast. Mary always listens carefully.

Preposition: Preposition gives context to nouns in relationship to other nouns or pronouns.
Example: John is going to Bengaluru. Bengaluru is in India.

Conjunction: A conjunction connects nouns, noun phrases, clauses or sentences together.
Example: Mary loves pastries and ice cream. she likes pizza but does not like a burger.

Interjection: Interjections are brief and abrupt pauses in speech, usually used for expressing emotions.
Example: Oh! that feels sad. Alas! she failed to clear the exam.
